I do not see how vlad1's suggestion of thought groups would accomplish any part of this request.

As an extension of this, I could see custom attributes as something that the user could select when setting up a new thought type and specifying these attributes as required/optional fields for all thoughts of that type.

This could easily be achieved with the ability to create custom attributes for thoughts/links. Hopefully that is what you are asking for and not a set of predefined types/properties. Being able to create a custom attribute for a thought and then populate it's value would be very helpful.

While I am also strongly in favor of the drill down functionality that has be discussed on the forums, this request does not include that functionality and is specific to navigating the brain in expanded view.

This is definitely a great idea, espcially for filtered views (based on report/type/tag/link). I could really use this in the expanded view.

    a) Can already be accomplished with tags/types
    b) Can already be accomplished with selection and the "Link Selection as..." context menu option
    c) Can already assign individual link types, the real benefit would be to set multiple links' type at the same time.

And without having my Library always available within the plex, there is no way to navigate to those items in the plex through the normal connections. I am forced to click on the tag. As I also mentioned. The Wander feature will never be able to get to those islands, because the ST isn't available in the plex as a choice to wander to.

JJS, by not having the Smart Though (ST) visible in the plex at all times, PB is not displaying the full connectedness of the brain. For example, I have a ST called "Library", any time I create a thought of type "Book", I also tag it with Library. I don't always have another connection from that book/author/subject to other thoughts, but it it connected to my Library.

Just wanted to post an update to this request... Without having smart thoughts persisted in the plex (#1 in list), it is beginning to severely limit the number of paths that I am able to navigate to certain thoughts. There are parts of my brain that are now islands because I can't link to the smart thought itself (can only be opened throught the tags tab). This also limits the Wander feature.

Why not use Supertypes for a general type of "Task". Then use subtypes for "Task: Status" where status could be planning, executing, completed, waiting for info, etc. Then use the thought type icon to visually distinguish them. You can run a report for all tasks or you could also add a tag to group all tasks together in the plex with a tag thought.

Hey, this is a good idea. I would certainly like to be able to export/archive selected sections of a brain file. This would really be useful for sharing data in a brain file with other PB users (without creating a brainzip of an entire brian).

@SamCox, You did get me to finally create a thread for an idea I had about turning calendar entries into smart thoughts. Take a look a this and lets see if we can refine the idea to meet your needs as well.

Or filter based on report results (assuming calendar entries could be reported on)?

Let's try to focus on the goal you are trying to achieve: a filtered plex view of thoughts with events contained within a range of dates.

Why wouldn't the timeline feature solve this?

This seems like a rather weak work-around for a problem which could be solved by other requested features. The problem I have with this request is that it forces a convention upon all users that might or might not mesh with the way that users are working with the calendar or tags.

How would you handle thoughts which have multiple parents and both parents have ordered lists?

Just realized that this feature request may interferre with the way that the new smart thoughts are implemented. I think there needs to be a few modifications to the smart thoughts to get the best useability out of the product. More discussion on the forum:

@BHurd, just trying to clarify the request... it certainly isn't very clear in the original post. And I agree, indexing virtual thoughts (folders/files) would be helpful.

need the ability to edit posts...

But I think there is a difference between filtering the plex based on types/tags (which preserves the current plex structure but shows only relevant information)... and completely restructuring the plex based on search parameters. Both can be extremely useful, but are NOT entirely overlapping features.

Saving a search as a thought and displaying the results as child thoughts has been discussed before. I really like that idea. It adds more context to the plex...
