The "checkbox" feature could also be on the "selection box" right click menu to create/remove multiple checkboxes in one operation.

However this is implemented, drag and drop ordering is essential to its usefulness. The idea is to make the ordered thought process as transparent as possible to the user so he can quickly and effectively plan out or list what he needs in a ordered manner. This would be very effective in the outline view and take that view to another level of usefulness.

Harlan, I second Middleway's comment. As a ex-programmer, I had guessed the problem your comment confirms. User control over thought ordering is a means of using an effective "brainstorming" tool as "work oriented" tool. Ordered planning is critically important for most real world tasks. This is particularly true in a corporate environment.

This functionality is present in Freemind which allows hotkeys to move node up, down, promote, and demote. Thereby the full functionality of outlining is present. This functionality, if placed in the current PersonalBrain outline mode, would make rearranging a brain a snap since the nodes, in the outline view, are only single parent nodes.

really the exact same request as "user ordered thoughts for report outlining"

In line with this suggestion, when you click on "Types" in the context menu for a thought you should see a combo box with "as you type" selecting, not a frustrating, error-prone, hard to use submenu

This is already available in the Outline view of version 5. If you mean something different, please explain. Thanks.

Correction to foregoing: in 2nd case of clicking on child body in outline mode (e.g., to see its notes), should keep tree contents intact. Only change the contents of the plex (the current action) if shift key is held down while clicking. The button is for folding/unfolding. Keeping the entire tree visible as is, unless user consciously folds/unfolds with button, is a main advantage of outlining.

When you click on a child thought in outline mode focus goes to child and the outline deriving from the parent thought is lost (i.e., its other children no longer show). Better on button click to keep the entire original view and expand the child thought. But if the child is clicked (but not on its button) then retain the current behavior of focusing on the child thought. Similar to Explorer tree.

Upon further reflection, have small button on thought (even if only in outline mode). If clicked, expand children (one level) but freeze plex. If the thought is clicked not the button (in outline mode) then change focus to that thought as normal. This type functionality is standard in outliners and file managers. Users are familiar with it and it is extremely useful.

One modification to outline mode folding/unfolding: Have way to freeze the plex when expanding thoughts in that mode. Could either freeze plex if shift held down when clicking on thought or have plex frozen as default and if shift held down then go to that thought (the current action).

the brain: I stand corrected respecting the outline view and have elsewhere expressed my view on the importance of beefing up this view to support user ordering. That said, if not too much trouble, it still would be useful in the normal plex view to have individual thought folding/unfolding to better focus on a particular thought train.

One possible solution is if PersonalBrain allowed drag and drop linking of thoughts into another apps. In that way you could for example link a thought to an Excel sheet and from an Excel cell link directly back to another thought. It solves the real problem of the difficulty of importing info maintained in other apps. Keep your excel sheet and selectively link into PersonalBrain as needed.

Would suggest first adding mid-word searching (e.g., "*" wildcard prefix), normal boolean (including "Not"), and "Near", etc. operators. Most end users are already very familiar with these searches. Then regular expressions. Have found that regular expressions, useful for the technical minded, can be daunting for non technical users and are prone to user mistakes.

JJS: good idea. My only point was to make quick idea note taking as easy as possible without the distraction of worrying about later linking. This is an element of some very effective "GTD" systems. Jot the idea down immediately when you think of it.

anakon: my only point was that the functionality of having ordered list in the thought itself is similar to having ordered child thoughts. The separate issue is the display of that ordered info. Here is where the outline view becomes an essential addition to PersonalBrain. You can see the order either within the thought or as an ordered list of children in outline view. Really a display issue.

it looks to be the same, in concept, as simply allowing user specified ordering of child nodes already requested in "Please bring back user defined sort order in Plex" and "User ordered thoughts for report outlining". The common element of all is permitting user defined ordering of (child) thoughts

How would work: (1) if single click on brush: (a) freeze plex(?); (b) apply once the selected thought's type to the next thought clicked on and then normal mode is active. (2) if double click on brush: (a) freeze plex; (b) apply selected thought's type to all thoughts next clicked on until Escape hit to end "painting".

Could be easily accomplished by adding another menu item to the right click menu in the selection box that allows the thought type of all selected items to be set to the type of currently selected thought in the plex

this simple idea is very important. PersonalBrain (or any other info system) is about getting to the info. Have used Locate32 to great results because of the very simplicity of using "*" and "?" wildcards and prefixing all files with yy-mm-dd format (similar to the Timeline request). Locate easily find words buried in other words. It you can't find what you need, what's the use?
