An error occurred while saving the comment Tommie N. Carter, Jr., MBA commentedWhy stop there? In fact one should expect full support for regular expression searching. This feature set is among the most basic and would allow for complex pattern matching. Google regex for more information.

An error occurred while saving the comment Tommie N. Carter, Jr., MBA commentedMight be implemented by linking an email address/format to a dll that then feeds a drop-box thought to capture the inbound emails (either locally or sent out to a web service for webbrain insertion). Might be a bit tough for the local dll to deal with all the extra searching. A better idea might be to send the email to a dropbox (email address) and perform processing on the server to update the webbrain.
An error occurred while saving the comment Tommie N. Carter, Jr., MBA commentedNot sure how this would work successfully. One might begin with a thought functioning as a drop-box but then getting one's email system (not to mention, there are so many of these) to forward these messages properly.
The one way that it might work 100% of the time is using a web service to host the drop box and then forwarding the message to a hosted brain on web-brain. With user's brains on automatic sync then the new thought would show up with no problem.

Clarification from John – this is for opening attachments from the instant activate results pop-up. You can already directly open attachments from the main search results list.
An error occurred while saving the comment Tommie N. Carter, Jr., MBA commentedHarlan,
In this context might it also not be a good idea to be able to find additional thoughts in the external search area? I mean if we can search other programs why not other brains? Since we can use the URL of a brain, why not show such results in the extended search area?

An error occurred while saving the comment Tommie N. Carter, Jr., MBA commentedTaking a picture of the webpage and capturing it's link might be a safer option. Websites can have lots of nasty scripts, malware, adware, pop-ups, etc. These culprits can adversely affect performance of the brain. See my write-up on a useful method to store a reference to the site without the risk http://tommiecarter.blogspot.com/2011/02/managing-sites-on-pb.html

An error occurred while saving the comment Tommie N. Carter, Jr., MBA commentedWe definitely need to review this small but wonderful idea. At this point we can search external apps including mail, address book, and calendar. But we cannot search another Brain? Perhaps this could work similar to the other external search features. When selected the thought could simply use the same implementation that allows thought URL launching.
Please vote this up, it's a valuable idea.

An error occurred while saving the comment Tommie N. Carter, Jr., MBA commentedJust to add to this idea a bit. Other interface problems include the vertical arrow selectors on the boundary between web brain and comments are too close to the comment button. An iPad specific interface would immediately make PB on the iPad a reality.

An error occurred while saving the comment Tommie N. Carter, Jr., MBA commentedThis is genius!
One would have to be able to resize the desktop space used by the application because of the many things that happen on one's desktop (trash, drives, shortcuts) however I could see this working although I would expect that it would take a lot of effort since the desktop is already specialized to handle a lot of other events.

It seems like one could do this already with Operating System tools. For example in Windows right click, select properties and check out advanced... One should see the ability to encrypt an entire folder. MacOS has similar functionality. If someone gets the hard disk without your password then it is impossible (improbable based on some systems) that they will recover one's password. I second the sentiment by JRaymond for protecting individual thoughts (and their subsidiaries). We can already mark the thought private but securing access might have some usefulness. However, given the current functionality, these changes would have wide impact including search, indexing and a bunch of other features.
