This already exists in the web client and will be coming to the desktop in a future version. From the link properties dialog, click the actions button (... icon) and select `Edit link types`

When the sync icon moves it means that a sync of another brain is taking place. This will be adjusted to be less distracting in a future release.

Of course I know that can click outside of a dialog to close it. I was talking about a decent UI design and following standards...

There might be a workaround: Make the attachment a thought of its own; then link several thoughts to it.
