Timeline
To have the possibility to add a new metadata to the thought that is Time. This should not be the creation date but simply a date added by the user.
Thoughts can then be visualized on a timeline. It will be nice that links will be visible in this new view of the plex.
May be this is a big implementation to insert in a new version. But I think will be very usefull to add a new dimension to the Brain.
TheBrain 9 includes a new timeline view with the ability to show thoughts on the timeline as well as calendar events that will be syncable with Google Calendar.
The timeline view features the ability to assign thoughts start and end times and to see those times visualized over a smoothly scaling, fully animated display spanning anywhere from multiple years to several hours and everywhere in between. Rather than replacing the existing view of the plex, the timeline works in concert with the plex so that clicks on the timeline can trigger thoughts on the plex and vice versa.

If there would be the ability to show dates in an historical timeline, this would realy enable the possibility to use the tool better for project management

Would really like more Project Management related functions, like "Due Date".

If the calendar is 3-party, is this possible to do now? Or must this be a functionality developed in PB itself?

I would add "due date" and "completed". That way, you could start to get project management. If something's not completed, its due date should slip and it should be visible in a view where things aren't going so well :)

@nomad - I agree, my intended use of a timeline would be to organize historical events in a graphical display to track dependencies/hierarchies/orders. I think we need some clarity as to what is being requested. If this is just a playback of thoughts entered into a brain file, then I would like to remove my votes and start a new request.
Can the OP clarify the intended use of this feature?

I would like a start date and end date. Think in terms of classifying historical data like a war for example. The calendar needs proper year, month, week, day views rather than the odd looking ones it has at the moment and a proper date/time picker (ever tried clicking back to 1066 from 2008 one year at a time)

worth exploring?
rough idea of what timelines could look like (try xpanded view)
virtual timenodes to be created/modified automatically (start/end date)
timenodes should be "drillable" (up/down) result =more compressed/xpanded views BUT keeping links to proper thought (eg link to jan 07 becomes link to Q1 07 and viceversa)

I strongly second the multiple timelines per brain suggestion
Obviously the calendar could be the base for this but as it is it's poor/clumsy
uses:
Org hierarchies (one thought per person: track when entered position AND when moved somewhere else, see position history of person, see org as it was at given date)
Economic forecasts reports: when was the forecast published, for when is it valid -

If I'm reading this correctly, a timeline would allow one to watch the growth of a brain, perhaps in the form of a series of screenshots. I'm working on a brain for identifying, expanding and mobilizing one's personal network. A timelined 'movie' would be instructive, showing the evolution of understanding and action as someone works on this. It gets my vote.

(...continued) I would also like the possibility to have a timeline for the active thought as an embedded bpart of the background in the plex. Adjustale of course as to where it should go (top, bottom, sides)

Why only one timeline per Brain? It could be programmed that you could select from user defined timeline "names". Also I would like it to have a start and end date. If I should have implmented this, there would be a "Timeline" tab in the tools section. Obviously you would have a graphical representaion of the timeline. If you selected multiple thought the get listed with the corresponding color.

@:nickjhowe: have tried tagging many times, gets to be too cumbersome to maintain. My motto is "KISS". don't want to worry about tags and interrupt my chain of thought when working; i simply want to be able to quick order my ideas to get something done or to later remember that order.

This gets my vote. @stan887: allowing events to be filtered using tags or types would allow multiple timelines from the same set of data.

The idea is good. One problem is that you can only have one timeline per brain. I have suggested allowing the user to order child nodes. Allowing user ordering of children makes muliple timelines easy. You can do this now to some extent by prefixing a year-month-day stamp to each child (e.g., 2008-04-28) and then sorting.

I would like to add that the thought timeline should not be limited to only one date per thought. I second the idea of using the event dates/times as the source of the timeline data.

You can already add a date and time to a thought using a calendar event (actually you can add multiple such events to any thought).
I support your request and suggest that a timeline function is implemented for the plex that uses the event dates/times as basis.
