Timeline
To have the possibility to add a new metadata to the thought that is Time. This should not be the creation date but simply a date added by the user.
Thoughts can then be visualized on a timeline. It will be nice that links will be visible in this new view of the plex.
May be this is a big implementation to insert in a new version. But I think will be very usefull to add a new dimension to the Brain.
TheBrain 9 includes a new timeline view with the ability to show thoughts on the timeline as well as calendar events that will be syncable with Google Calendar.
The timeline view features the ability to assign thoughts start and end times and to see those times visualized over a smoothly scaling, fully animated display spanning anywhere from multiple years to several hours and everywhere in between. Rather than replacing the existing view of the plex, the timeline works in concert with the plex so that clicks on the timeline can trigger thoughts on the plex and vice versa.

Great detailed suggestions already. If not already mentioned, I would like to see this feature for selected thoughts as some lend themselves to time order sorting while others do not. Perhaps you could add a special sort field to a thought that would be used only if it was populated. Otherwise, the default sort would be used. You could also add different formats to the field. One for date and another for an integer. For example, you might want the sort the elements of the periodic table for which dates don't readily apply.

It would really help me to be able to be able to view thoughts in datetime order, datetime being set by the user, so that I could more easily follow a discourse between, say, me and a company or representatives from that company. I can use a workaround by adding a word eg 0907282345 (date and time) at the front of each thought, but that is cumbersome and distracts from the Thought itself. It looks like it would be a popular enhancement, too. It would be enough for me to be able to add year/month/date/time and to be able to sort a view by that stamp.

Timeline function: suggest - elapsed timeline; timeline count-down; time created (autofunction option or short-cut key would be fab!); time calculation between two "items" - could be adjacent thoughts (F8); Children in same group (F6); or Parents (F7) or?....

Agree with mandox .. use the existing calander function .. just display the information in a new way.

I've realized that a Timeline view can be thought of as the Normal view ROTATED 90 DEGREES, and using TIME relationships (special PB links?)
Parents would be to the left (earlier dates) and children to the right, and jump links would be drawn between thoughts sharing the current time interval (creating. multiple "bands").
Add a time scale ribbon, implement a "time zoom" for the plex: voilá!

Maybe a 'Timeline' view could be implemented by implementing multi-level tags. See my suggestion http://thebrain.uservoice.com/pages/general/suggestions/106582-multi-level-tags for further details. If in conjunction with multi-level tags, a tag based view was implemented (allowing you to navigate around lists of tags), then using tag types of 'Calendar' would let you move around based on dates.

We can already sort thoughts by date of creation, date of modification, etc. Just go to Options > Arrange thoughts by...
It would be nice to have a hotkey within PB to automatically add a date/time stamp to thought names in a user-selectable format. Then, thoughts could be sorted by name and this would translate into a sort by timeline. -

i don't vote highly for dates. i would simply like the ability to view events time ordered. as a product manager, i would like to visualize version control with branch / merge type display. with directional link types i should be able to display a sequence of events in logical order. think also of the use in uml modeling

Although it's not the best solution, see this in the forums, for my approach to using dates in the brain...

@LukeP, What if all calendar dates containing an event were turned into smart thoughts and the thoughts corresponding to the events for those dates were the children of these new smart thoughts?
Here's a thread with some screeshots for discussion:

@sunwei415, Althought I think the table display is a good idea. That is not what I am looking for in a timeline. I'm wanting a visual display of calendar events so that I can see how their occurance/order affects the relationships of the thoughts they are attached to.

Hi, PB guys, look at this: http://thebrain.uservoice.com/pages/general/suggestions/76557-traditional-table-view-and-more, it is a more general idea above TimeLine.

Twospoons, if we do have ability to add custom attributes, and filter / arrange nodes based on those attributes, e.g. add custom attribute 'date1' and arrange nodes in the outline view based on that attribute, while filtering any dates with date1 < YourDate, would this problem be addressed? Or are we looking for a visual representation of timeline, sim to a gantt chart?
-
twospoons commented
@LukeP, just adding custom attributes does not inherently solve the requested timeline. Users can already add calendar entries onto thoughts, but there is no way of displaying a selection of thoughts in a date/time ordered manner. Outline view comes close, if all of your thoughts have the date as the thought name, and your brain structure is strictly linear. But how realistic is that?

LukeP commented
Implementing http://thebrain.uservoice.com/pages/general/suggestions/70182 would address this request (and a few others) as well. you could add attribute of type date and arrange thoughts based on that attribute. Of course being able to search and filter on such attribute would also be a part of this feature request.

I agree. It should be quite simple to make the date field user-editable. This would allow me to drag old (even ancient!) files into The brain and then change the date to indicate their true creation date.
I would love TB to be used as a universal store of information - ie emails and files. Being able to date thoughts is important for this. -

I would like to have the ability to create and organize thoughts by date/timeline. This would be to facilitate the use of PB as a journal/diary.

I agree with twospoons "my intended use of a timeline would be to organize historical events in a graphical display to track dependencies/hierarchies/orders."

Perhaps one form of this can be built up from components:
1) "1...n" globally named "time facts" (tags?), enterable for each thought
2) Global cascading menu item:
View > Time Perspective > (e.g.) date entered, date left, due date
3) Allow "by thought" ordering (great in itself) with "current time perspective" as one of the choices (name, thought type, "current time perspective",...) -

I support it and have a work around until it is done: outline-view and year as first word in thought name
