1. Customise Toolbar

   These days, many apps have a feature to customise the toolbar: change sequence of icons or remove and add them. (Originally I was going to ask for a button to breing up the Todo List, but I realise that might only help me - while they real benefit would come if we had an option to just tailor it to our needs)

   (Ok, maybe you think there are options that need to be there and maybe you always want them to be in that sequence - then at least give as the option to control a "custom" portion of the bar...)

2. Multiline-Thoughts

   i often have very long thoughts... not single words or short phrases
   but i want to see the whole thought and not look at the markdown notes...
   please alow header text to be split into multiple lines within one thought

3. The brain as a reading tool - able to directly support note-taking process.

   --> (1) First of all - visualisation of e-books.

   Currently, only PDF files are being visualised in the notes section. All other files are represented by a file name and an icon. In order to become a research and reading platform, more file types must be visualized.

   And this is not difficult, as the visualisation code is available in open-source communities for free.

   The following document types should be readable within Thebrain application:

     Use epub.js (JavaScript library) to render inside TheBrain’s web-like view.

     Would likely require embedding a web component and adding some formatting controls.

     Reasonably doable, especially on desktop (Electron-based frontend).

   With these two types, 99% of documents will be visualised and immediately readable in Thebrain.

   --> (2) As a reader and researcher, I miss a very important functionality in Thebrain. We miss the combination of an open document (.PDF or .EPUB) and an open notes canvas beside each other. This would allow a real note-taking process within Thebrain. Currently, when reading e-books, we need to have to use external readers and note-taking apps and import the results into Thebrain. But Thebrain could offer the situation as presented in Figure 2. It would be easy to copy specific sentences out of the book into a note. (Figure 1)

   --> (3) Adding some extra functionality like:
   - returning to the position in the 'book and notes combination' in order to re-instate the last working context and be able to work further where we left off.
   - possibility to annotate within the e-books. Also, the possibility to visualise all annotations in a list and, by selection, go to their position in the document.

   One thought further is that it would be great to have defined layouts in the brain:
   Example:

   • Default mode:
     Where you have the plex and notes canvas, allowing the basic behaviour using Thebrain. (Figure 1)
     This mode already exists.

   • Reading mode:
     where you have both the document you want to read and a notes canvas together. When saving, both the context where you left is saved, and the note is saved as a child thought under the thought of the e-book. (Figure 2)

   • Presentation mode:
     where you can present a stream of thoughts with their corresponding notes combined with plex-views that has been created ahead.

   This include the definition of a presentation stream:
   Define stream: <Stream-name>
   1. Thought 1 - visualise plex and note
   2. Thought 2 - visualise plex and note
   3. Plex-view - view plex content only
   4. View figure - view a specific figure within a note - (graphics)

   To start: goto presentation mode and start the stream <stream-name>, this stream could be played automatically or manually.

4. Add API endpoint to add images that are use in a note's markdown.

   The /attachments/{brainId}/{thoughtId}/file can be used to upload files. But everything uploaded through that endpoint is visible as an attachment.
   Looking at a note with an embedded .png, I saw those are stored in a .data subfolder - so we need a new endpoint (or an enhanced version of the one I mentioned) to allow saving files there.

5. Improve the timeline feature and add a new chronology feature to the brain map so specific temporal-based relationships can be visualized!

   Note: This is a general idea, I'm not suggesting the features should work exactly like how I laid out, but more what end result / function should be strived for (ie. chronologically organizing information in a more selective way)

   To provide context:
   I'm interested in mapping connections / relationships between individuals. It's very important to be able to do this, as understanding relationships between individuals is critical for analysing potential conflicts of interest, including historically.

   The individuals are the bedrock "child thoughts" of my brain.

   Their parent thoughts will be things which bundle people together such as organisations, movements, maybe locations, publications (books ect.).

   So sibling thoughts of a given child thought will be based on the bundling-factors that individual partakes in (for instance, what organisations they are part of).

   Jump thoughts will be other individuals they have a 1 to 1 connection with such as being friends (assuming we've not mapped their friendship group as a parent thought).

   This model is great but it has two big problems.

   Two individual may be part of an organisation but at completely different times, so their shared membership may not be a good indicator that they have a relationship.

   Also, an individual's precise relationship to an organisation may change across time.

   I've described 3 problems (A,B,C) and their respective solutions below.

   The problem:
   A. Currently the timeline feature only allows us to state an event / time period and map that to one individual. This already creates a problem for the above model.

   If I want to track who is the chairman of an organisation at any given time. I could add an event / time period under each relevant individual to show their tenure as chairman.

   But ideally I'd also want that to be under the content / notes of the organisation (when I click on that idea), so already that would require two seperate events to be created to describe one event in reality.

   B. The second big problem is if I simply wanted to see the temporal relationship between two individuals, by seeing what they're getting up to or which organisations they're members of at different times, it currently isn't easy at all to do.

   Likewise, if I wanted to see an organisation's timeline and compare it to one or more individual's behaviour overtime, this is also not easy to do.

   Why is this? Well because it's currently not possible to toggle or control which events show up on the timeline. All have to show up at once, making it so it can get crowed extremely quickly and easily.

   C. The third big problem relates to the brain mapping itself, which may be preferable to the timeline as a means to represent connections which just exist during a given period of time.

   Currently the connections between ideas aren't at all impacted by time. So using the model I set out above, I can just show who was part of an organisation at any point in time, but not who was part of an organisation for a given time period.

   I could get around this by making an organisation into a parent idea and then make it so each year of that organisation's existence is a child idea.

   However this would of course significantly complicate the brain model, and any given unit of time I try to use would be arbitrary.

   If the chairman changed multiple times within a year lets say, then I'd have to label multiple child connections as 'chairman'.

   Information about who was specifically the chairman when will be lost if I try to gleam it from the brain model (instead of the notes).

   The solution:
   A.The first quick fix is simply to allow groups of thoughts to be added to one event.

   That way, when someone becomes chairman of a company, for instance, I could put both the thought of that company and the individual under the same event so it doesn't clog up the timeline as much.

   Also, ideally the instead of the timeline showing [thought - label], the label is what should be shown, then maybe a list of the associated thoughts. That way we have more control over what we want to see in the condensed display on the timeline.

   B. This problem would also be relatively easy to fix. All that would be needed is a feature where you can search up and tick which thoughts are visible, which would make it so only events those thoughts have been tied to show up.

   You could further enhance this by optionally allowing the user in this toggle menu to select which events (tied to the selected idea) specifically show up or not.

   That way, the user would have excellent control over which events are actually visible or not, allowing them to have an easy chronological comparision of different individuals / thoughts behaviour across time.

   The user would be able to control the complexity and how many events and / or the thoughts associated with them are being shown at once.

   This could be further optimized with an optional view showing other thoughts (in addition to those the user themselves selected) which are associated with the events that are visible (contigent upon the thoughts selected by the user)

   That way, this additional view would allow you to see all thoughts / individuals also associated with the events your selected thoughts / individuals are involved in.

   Whilst the normal view would allow you to compare what only your selected individuals are doing at given times without this added complexity.

   C. To overcome this limitation, i'd recommend making two changes.

   First of all, make it so thoughts themselves have an ingrained time / period feature.
   This will make it so if I have a thought for an individual or organisation, I could encode the chronological dates regarding when it was born / created and then died / stopped existing.

   Second of all, I'd recommend adding the exact same feature to links themselves.

   However, given that an individuals connection to others or organisations change overtime, I'd recommend enabling there to be more than one time-period in a link with a different label attatched to it.

   It could be toggled so that it's up to the user whether these dates / the period show up when hovering over an idea or a link with the cursor.

   But more importantly, a feature should be added to enable the user to set what time period they want the brain to display.

   For instance, in a brain storing organisations and individuals as ideas, I could set the period I want to see between 2015-2020.
   Any organisations or individuals which only existed before or after this period wouldn't show up.

   The same would be true for links. If a person was only part of an organisation between 2012-2014, their connection to the organisation would no longer be visible

   All the whilst, that individual could still show up if they existed in 2015-2020, and their connections to other ideas would be shown.

   How specific the time period is can be completely controlled by the user. Therefore, they'll be able to both have rich information about connections during a specific time or have rich information about connections more generally if chronology isn't so important to them. All gleamed from a visual display.

   Adding this feature would make the software have an entire new dimension and means of visually organising information. It would be very very powerful.

   As an example:
   Let's say a company had 3 seperate chairmen within a year. I may only care about who was involved in the company under one of those chairmen.

   I could:
   Hover over the link between that individual and company to see when they were a chairman.

   Then I'd set the global temporal period to match that so I only see individuals and connections which existed for that time-period.

   If I wanted to do the same for the other chairmen, or just look at connections as a whole, I could then do that on the exact same model, simply by changing the global time period toggle!

   P. S.
   To make gauging what time-period to change to easier, I'm sure features could be added.

   For instance, a search function for could exist for links (which first puts "default" into the first thought which is just whatever the active thought is) and then you type in the second thought, and this gives you a list of each link and the time period involved which exists between them.

   And maybe a scroller could be added so you can quickly zoom through different time periods and see how the links change for whatever the active thought is.

6. Another level of Team permission... "drafter / commenter"

   I'd like to suggest another level of permission for Team Brain, which I'm considering for a client as an organizational learning tool.

   I don't want anybody to be able to change everything, either intentionally or accidentally.

   But I want everyone to be able to contribute.

   Would a drafter / commenter permission be possible? Where a user could add a thought, but not delete other thoughts? Writer / Administers could edit and add the though.

7. Have a local globe where you can enter geo-location coordinates

   You could create a separate section like the timeline section and have a spot where you can plug in where in the world something might have happened. There are opensource Google Earth-type websites out there with free data and low-poly Earth spheres. Would be just an extra feature to be able to input and export data with, which I believe is one of TheBrain's biggest strengths.

8. Sort Thoughts by Note word count

   Add the ability to sort Thoughts by Note word count (the number of words in a Note associated to a Thought). This way we can immediately tell, among a large number of Thoughts, which have notes with more or less content, thereby determining the importance of the Thought/Note.

9. iOS: Add Setting to Disable Tap-to-Edit Notes

   Frequently, when scrolling through notes on the iOS app, an unintended tap is registered, causing the application to enter edit mode.

   I would appreciate the addition of a setting that allows users to disable tap-to-edit functionality, so that entering Edit mode requires using the Pencil button.

10. allow wandering sub-sections of the brain (sub-branches, specific tags/categories etc)

    I really love the "wander"-function. And I think TB was also leading the field here, in terms of identifying the critical role of serendipity and re-surfacing, which all other PKMs normall identify very late in their product-cycles (if at all).

    This is why I always wished this function would have some more depth, fingrain, and discriminatory abilities – for a somehow 'steered/guided serendipity'.

    What I would hope for:
    • wandering only certain sub-branches of the brain
    • specify criteria for wandering (tags, categories, (fuzzy) search-strings…

11. Figure out why it crashes constantly when uploading thoughts

    I Started a new brain of my hard drive data. I create a thought, then drag & drop the contents of a directory from my computer into the thought. TheBrain crashes multiple times an hour as I do this. Seems to be pretty basic functionality, shouldn't be so buggy.

12. I can print a quick todo list - CTRL (CMD) + P before a meeting?

    When I export .PDF or .HTML the little todo square list items - do not show up for print - missing both in .PDF and .HTML-

    but I wondered why not CTRL (CMD) + P just the selected text directly from the content - the only work arround seems to screen capture and then print - but my "system 1" wants to save seconds in a busy moment before a meeting

13. Future vision of TheBrain and AI

    I already made a comment on another post but I thought it would maybe be also worth as a own post.

    It seems to me that TheBrain project seems to focus on utility and beeing an organize your tasks and thoughts project, because it can not really compete with normal AI as a knowledgebase and it shouldn't. But I think there could be an awesome way for the future to share your thoughts with others:

    I was interested in making my own AI and it is quite a hard task if you have some unconventional view on something, but in the end that would be of value.
    In a world where you can get any common knowledge within seconds from an AI, what good is the human brain anymore?

    Lets say you have some unconventional idea and you want to share your personal brain with others. For example:

    Salt is bad for health. Maybe you think its good and want to start a brain to make research and gather a lot of opinions and data.

    Now you start creating your TheBrain over some time and take into consideration different experts and aspects. You look into nature and observe animals or even your own bodies cravings after a sauna session. Let your Brain grow with different views. Your views. Come to your own conclusions and share them with others.
    Here comes AI into play. AI should be used to understand your brain and your connections. In order to do this, an AI has to be trained and in this training has learned a lot of "bias". In this example that maybe salt is bad like sugar.
    The AI should prioritize your logic and conclusions over the basic training.

    The advantage that a future version of TheBrain would have over AI is exactly this. The human again, that can question common misconceptions and share it with others. The people that can access this information utilize a chat bot that give them answers in this way.

    Who would need this?
    Basically any person that prefers his own experience/knowledge over AI common knowledge and wants to share that with other people in form of a chat interface

    Maybe the salt example was not perfect but I can see a lot of other potential uses for this:

    • People in the medical field that prefer certain uncommon meds or treatments (Ivermectin)
    • Homeschooling teachers organizing and sharing their curriculum/knowledge
    • Investors and their thoughts they want to share
    • experience with different herbs, meds etc - No recommendations ofc
    • your training methods
    • basically anything you have experience with and do not agree with the common AI answer and want to share it in a more deeply manner

14. I really enjoy Cerebro

    I have been testing out Cerebro on 15.0.86, and I do believe it is truly a game-changer. The regular brain AI is much less sophisticated and I have found it of limited use. Cerebro, on the other hand, will become a core part of my organizational routine especially as it gets better at searching (finding all relevant thoughts rather than a limited number, etc.).

15. Bring thebrain 14 timeline back

    To the TheBrain Team,

    Please restore the classic TheBrain 14 bottom timeline view (or provide an option to enable it in TheBrain 15). Many of us relied on that persistent timeline for fast, visual navigation of our work over time, and the current alternatives do not offer the same clarity or efficiency. Bringing this timeline back, even as an optional legacy view, would preserve long‑established workflows and significantly improve usability for long‑time users.

16. Restore plex and notes zoom.

    On 15.0.95.0 running on macOS Sierra desktop plex and notes zoom are missing. No pinch/expand; no Command + "+/-", no dropdown menu picks. If there is a way to control the size of text (other than overriding the screen resolution, which is generally unacceptable), please make it obvious.

    I cannot figure out how to expand and collapse generations in 15.0.95. Has this functionality not migrated to later versions of TheBrain 15? This is a major gap if so.

18. When hovering over search results show related notes with search term(s) highlighted.

    In v.14 this is standard performance so I can see if the related note is what I am looking for.
    In v.15 you have to either open one result at the time to see the note content, or add all results to selection and then open them one by one.

19. Have thoughts with Type show up higher in search results

    I have typed thoughts that are Categories or Focus areas that I search for often and would like thoughts with Types set to get stronger weighting in the search algorithm.

20. Better Redo Function in the AI of the Notes Editor

    When using the Redo function in the AI assitant of the notes editor it would be helpful to have access to the last prompt entered. Often a Redo implies a change or refinement of the last prompt. Currently one has to reenter the complete previous prompt (and to remember the exact previous wording).
